Bohemians 3-1 Ramblers

Historically Bohemians came to Cobh back in April as our first ever A Championship opponents, won the game alright by 1-0, but failed to impress in doing so. Some 13 weeks later we travelled to Dalymount for the return game with more or less the same squad - minus absentees and starters in Kyle Downing, Peter O'Halloran and Mikey O'Shea, while Bohs use the fixture to give games to Matt Gregg (remember his penalty save in Cobh and 94th minute headed equaliser at Belfield last season), Jason McGuinness, Mark Rossiter and Glen Crowe. The reality of the A Championship as a Reserve League for Premier and First Division clubs rang through, and while in awe of those players' involvement, for the Ramblers players on the day it increased the challenge to perform both individually and collectively. Heroically that they did, it was not enough, and Bohemians confirmed their position as table toppers with a 3-1 win on a lush green carpet of a playing surface.

This first season is as much about learning as it is about results, and this particular game showcased the talents of Crowe as the study of a player in that learning curve. His movement off the ball, his hold-up play in receipt of it, his appreciation of space and in making more of it for himself, and most of all a goal instinct that has made him a legend of the modern LOI game. Here he scored with a thumping header, the art was as much in how he lost his marker, as it was in directing the header.

The game itself saw Mark Hughes - who scored the winner in Cobh - score again via the penalty spot, equalised by Shane Geasley on the rebound, after Gregg had saved Jonathan Spillane's original penalty-kick which he had won himself. Sean Byrne restored the lead for the home side, and Crowe just emphasised the victory with a third.
