Ramblers 2 - 5 Bray

repeating the defensive errors of previous games, invites gladly accepted by our opponents, that all other redeemable features of our offensive game are nullified by way of achieving results. Bray away, Bray home, good average of two goals scored in both fixtures, but the improper balance of nine goals conceded exposes our frailties. Two pitch inspections exposed the indifference of our weather even in the month of July, but the pitch in fairness never held an ounce of water and there certainly was enough of it fell during the day. Rain or no rain, but the town of Cobh seems to hold no favours towards this team and with every game the attendance becomes more sparse.

Ahead on 4 mins and Bray having travelled without a substitute bench, you were inclined to feel optimistic on a positive outcome. Jonathan Spillane it was who headed a bouncing ball, from a Pierce Donnachie cross, beyond the Bray defender and then steadied himself to shoot low into the corner for that lead goal. It lasted just another four minutes with Ramblers exposed down the right and Shane O Neill s low cross was inadvertently put into his own net by Michael Hastings. O Neill miscued his shot when he might have put Bray ahead minutes later after more defensive indecision. Up at the other end Peter O Halloran should possibly have restored the lead once more for Ramblers on 11 mins, but in attacking a low cross from Jordan O Leary s free-kick, he knocked the ball over. An attempted volley by Jonathan Spillane, as Mikey O Shea dug out a cross from the right, failed to come off.

As impressive here as he was in Bray, before he became a bit self-indulgent in the second-half, Bray s No. 10, Shane O Neill, skied over a cross from Darren Forsyth prior to coolly stroking a penalty on 32 minutes, after Barry Slattery was baulked in the area when in receipt of a throw ball on the right. Slattery then had a long-ranger just whiz wide, but more cursed was a Peter O Halloran header from Jordan O Leary s corner, that came back into play off the crossbar. Pierce Donnachie came in off his left-wing position to hit almost the identical spot with his shot close to half-time. But in between both passage of play and ill-luck for the home side, Bray had edged 3-1 ahead on 44 mins. A counter-attack that followed on from a John Forrest cross into the Bray area, saw Darren Forsyth scamper down the right, cross low, and Shane O Neill showing great anticipation and movement to lose his marker, and then the balance to guide his shot beyond a diving Shane Harrington.

3-1 became 4-1 some three minutes after the break, with a mistimed attempted clearance seized upon by Forsyth, and his shot had enough pace about it to squeeze under the body of Harrington. Gareth Coughlan then hit the inside of Harrington s post and out, and rare as it may seem, Forsyth hit the butt of the near post, saw the ball squirm along the goal line to hit the opposite post, and rebound into Harrington s arms. Both vying for the title of Ramblers Man of the Match, Shane Spillane saw his lay-off hit with venomous power by his midfield partner, Mikey O Shea, and the ball fairly arrowed into the net for the best goal of the night on 71 mins.

Credit Ramblers that their heads never dropped despite impending defeat, which Bray rubber-stamped on 87 mins, with Gareth Coughlan s original shot from O Neill s set-up blocked away by Harrington, but when O Neill returned the ball Coughlan this time used his head to successfully find the target.
