Bray Wanderers 3-4 Ramblers

Having had their previous game (vs Cork City) called off the previous week due to adverse weather condition, Rams made the long trip to Dublin to play Bray on a fine sunny Sunday morning. With new signings Ross Gaynor, and Ian Stapelton(signed from Cobh Ramblers) and the return of goalkeeper Darren Haines in the squad, Rams took to the field anxious to continue their good start to the league campaign. Within 5 minutes Ross Gaynor played a neat one-two with Mark Murphy and powered a shot to the roof of the Bray net. Bray were back on level terms on 20 minutes with a fine O’Neill strike. The final minutes of the first half were frantic as first, Rams jumped back in front when Gaynor was put through by Wayne McBride and coolly finished to the net. Straight form the kick off Bray swept upfield and and forced a penalty which O’Neill duly converted to leave the half time score level at 2-2.

On 65 minutes Gaynor completed his hat trick when following a surging Martin Deady run, the ball eventually found its way to Gaynor who struck for his and Rams third goal of the day. Once again Bray fought back and equalised on 75 minutes through substitute McNeill. Both teams threw everything into getting a winner and on the 90 minute mark Sean Daly unleashed a thunderbolt to the Bray net to give Rams a 4-3 lead. In the remaining 3 minutes of added time Bray had a header bounce on the line and over the bar, while Daly hit another screamer which came back off the bar. The management team of Alan and Darragh were very happy with the result and the workrate of the players, with 3 goal striker Ross Gaynor catching the eye upfront and Ian Stapleton in midfield showing a work rate and vision that figures well for his future prospects.

Team: Haines, Daly, Cahill(capt), O’Halloran, Deady, O’Shea, Stapleton, Long, McBride, Gaynor, Murphy

Subs: Spillane, Moore, Bruton, Ring, Grainger

Report: Jim Burke
