St Patrick’s Athletic 2-0 Ramblers

Cobh Ramblers vs St Patrick’s Athletic
Sunday 31-08-08

Cobh Ramblers 0 – 2 St Patrick’s Athletic

Following their 2-1 home defeat to Galway, Cobh Ramblers “A” Team made the long journey to face St.Patrick’s Athletic at Inchicore. The team management are extremely grateful to Pat Byrne Agency and John Spillane whose bus sponsorship helped avoid the necessity of the young players having to drive to Dublin. The team, short a number of players gave a good performance on a well manicured pitch on a day made for football. With St.Pats anxious to have the ball on the deck , the Rams were happy to display their own football talents and a free flowing 90 ensued. Rams had their chances early when Conor Meade and Mark Murphy came place. Pats were denied by Alan Burns in the Cobh goal and some excellent defending by a sloid Rams back 4. Pats opened the scoring on 31 mins when Rams lost the ball in midfield and Fagan played Laffan in to shoot past a diving Burns. The first quarter of the second half saw Rams at their best as they put the game to Pats. On 50 mins Meade crossed from the end line to Murphy whose glancing header beat the goalkeeper , hit a defender on the line and rebounded to safety off the upright. 6 mins later a superb flick from Meade brought an equally superb save from Fritz in the Pats goal. Injuries to Cobh’s Cahill and Spillane meant a reshuffle to the team, but they still went in search of an equaliser. Thenin the 88th min with a Cobh player down injured and the Pats manager calling to his players to “kick the ball out” Fitzpatrick continued on towards goal. Cobh hesitated long enough to allow the Pats player to get his shot off and put Pats two ahead. Despite the loss, team managers Alan O’Sullivan and Darragh Burke were not too disappointed and looked at the positive way the team played. They were also appreciative of the help given by James, John and Nigel on the day.

Team: Burns, Ring, Cahill, O’Halloran, Deady, Spillane, Long, Stapelton, McBride, Murphy, Meade.

Subs: Bruton (on 64 mins), O’Sullivan (on 72 mins), Daly, Downing
