Cork City 2-1 Ramblers
Cobh Ramblers vs Cork City “A Team” Bishopstown Tuesday 09/09/08
Cobh Ramblers 1 – 2 Cork City
With the Saturday fixture (rained off) refixed for Tuesday with a 6pm kick off Rams fielded a relatively strong side with Alan Carey, Shane Guthrie, Stephen Mulcahy and Conor Meade figuring in the starting eleven.
Cork City featured former Cobh Ramblers player Gareth Cambridge in their side, and indeed Cambridge scored what proved to be the winner for City. Cobh enjoyed the major portion of possession but despite a total of 17 efforts on goal, (7 on target, 10 off), had only a Stepehen Mulcahy goal to show for their efforts. This came on 36 mins when a Carey corner was headed powerfully to the net by Mulcahy.
Indeed Rams could have gone ahead as early as the 2nd minute when Mark Murphy all alone headed weakly into the keepers grasp. Again on 18 mins, David Daly when, clean through, shot mildly wide.
City’s Cambridge then drove through the heart of the Rams defence, only to chip the ball over Alan Burns and the cross bar on 23 mins. On 35 mins Conor Meade forced a smart save from McEnery, and from the resulting corner Rams took the league. City’s equaliser arrived in the 44th minute, when Rams keeper parried a shot from Eoin Forde and Stephen O’Driscoll forced the loose ball home. For 30 mins of the second half Rams probed for a lead goal, then with Deccie Cahill caught in possession by Stephen O’Driscoll, the city player hit the end line before cutting the ball back to Cambridge to knock it home.
Ramblers substitute Jonathan Spillane had two efforts on goal in the 84th and 87th minute saved, and when Mark Murphy’s 89th minute effort was saved on the line by a City defender, Rams last chance of salvaging a point was gone,
Indeed at the end the question was more how were the three points lost, not salvaging of one point.
To add to Cobh’s misery they played out the final minutes with ten men, when Conor Meade, querying the balls position for a City free kick, received two yellow cards for his observations.
Team: Burns, Carey, Guthrie, Cahill, Mulcahy, D.Daly, Stapleton, Long, McBride, Meade, Murphy
Subs: Grainger for Daly(66min), Spillane for Stapleton(77 min), Ring, Downing, O’Sullivan
